About Madaba

The Mosaic city Hotel is located in Madaba, which lies 30 kilometers southwest of Amman along the 5000-year-old King's Highway and 20 kilometers from Queen Alia International Airport.

The Madaba tourism cluster extends from Bethany in the north to the villages of Thiban, Mukawer and Um Rasas in the south, covering a historic area that was known as the plain of Moab over two thousand years ago. This cluster is anchored by the city of Madaba and contains a scattering of villages located across the bluffs descending to the Dead sea, with spectacular scenes of swooping valleys and unique rock formations, as well as views of the Dead Sea itself.

Christians consider the Madaba cluster an important part of the Holy Land, and the cluster contains three of the six Vatican–sanctioned pilgrimage sites in Jordan.

Madaba's chief attraction, which lies in the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George,is a wonderfully vivid, 6th-century Byzantine mosaic map showing the entire region from Jordan and Palestine in the north, to Egypt in the south.

Madaba is not just about mosaics. It possesses a varied resource base which attracts cultural tourists as well as religious, sports and adventure-minded visitors.

Madaba also contains many other valuable attractions and resources, including the Ma’in hot springs, Mount Nebo, the Dead Sea Panorama Center, a mosaic crafts industry, a weaving industry, and several ancient structure and charming Ottoman-era building.

In many respects Madaba is a typical East Bank city, which is unique in one major aspect: underneath almost every house lies a fine Byzantine mosaic. Many of these mosaics have been excavated and are on display in the city's museum.
